Bishop Bibi’s Annual Christmas Visit Brings Hope and Joy to Buea Central Prison Inmates
Buea, January 26th, 2023 – Over two thousand inmates at Buea Central Prison experienced a heartwarming celebration as they gathered for mass with the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Buea, His Lordship Michael Bibi. This annual tradition not only marks a moment of spiritual connection but also serves as an opportunity to provide essential goods to enhance the well-being of the inmates.
In a poignant homily, Bishop Bibi conveyed a powerful message to the incarcerated individuals. He emphasized that their time in detention should be viewed as a chance for personal growth, urging them to emerge from their confinement as better individuals, ready to make positive contributions to their communities and the nation at large.
The Bishop reminded the inmates of their inherent human dignity, asserting that, whether inside or outside the prison walls, they are equal in the eyes of God. He encouraged them to perceive their incarceration as a learning experience rather than a condemnation.
Highlighting the Diocese’s commitment to aiding prisoners, Bishop Bibi revealed that, in 2023, the Diocese had successfully facilitated the release of 22 individuals by covering their fines, ensuring their freedom upon completing their sentences.
Applauding the growing collaboration between the Diocese and prison authorities, Bishop Michael Bibi expressed his dedication to paying the fines of even more prisoners in 2024, reinforcing his commitment to securing the freedom of those who have fulfilled their sentences.
“The prison is not your home; hence, those of us who are not here must strive to live in a way that prevents us from being brought here. For those within these walls, strive to leave here better than when you came,” stated Bishop Bibi, motivating the inmates to embrace positive transformation.
The Bishop extended gratitude to prison authorities for allowing the Diocese to conduct mass services every Sundays and Wednesdays within the prison premises. He emphasized the Diocese’s role in assisting prison authorities in carrying out their responsibilities more effectively.
During the mass celebration, three inmates received the sacrament of confirmation, symbolizing a renewed sense of faith and hope.
In response to the challenges faced by the newly established prison school, the Bishop pledged support. He promised to address issues such as funding for exam registrations and the shortage of teaching materials. Bishop Bibi instructed the Education Secretary to collaborate with prison authorities, the Justice and Peace office, and CARITAS from the Diocese of Buea to identify and resolve these challenges, ensuring that inmates receive quality education.
Additionally, the Bishop announced plans to construct a second borehole to alleviate the water supply issues within the prison yard, a concern raised by the prisoners during the visit.
The four-hour-long ceremony, filled with mass, drama, traditional dance, and other festivities, concluded with the distribution of essential items such as bags of rice, soaps, and clothing to the inmates, bringing joy and a sense of community to Buea Central Prison.”
