CARITAS Buea Trains Farmers On How To Vaccinate, Treat Animals
Some farmers in Batoke, West Coast Sub-division, Fako Division of the Southwest Region of Cameroon have been trained by CARITAS Buea on animal treatment and vaccination.
The training workshop, which was organised recently, was aimed at upgrading the capacity of farmers on how to treat and vaccinate their animals, especially piglets, the sow and bow.
During training workshop, some 23 animals were vaccinated. The animals also received prophylaxis treatment. They were equally administered vitamins (maxivite), Dewormer (levamizole) and antibiotics.
The training workshop falls inline with CARITAS’ area of intervention to assist farmers, who are involved or wishing to get involve in animal production.
Before the training workshop, CARITAS Buea had earlier carried out research, analysis and concerted with the farmers on the relevance of the training.
During the broad-based research carried out by CARITAS personnel, it was discovered that most of the animals were confined in a fence and as such, the practice has orchestrated the prevalence of certain diseases like bacterial infections and parasites both internal and external.
However, with one of CARITAS’ core objectives being to meet the needs of the farmers, who are constantly complaining of the increased cost from other animal experts just to
vaccinate their animals, the seminar was described as timely.
Over the years, CARITAS has been working towards empowering farmers to achieve FCFA 100,000 gain through animal production first, by cutting cost and increasing profit.
The recent training workshop helped farmers to acquire basic skills on animal treatment and vaccination. They were also introduced to
some common names of medications used on animals based on their availability.
After the training, the farmers said they are now equip with knowledge on how to vaccinate their animals, without waiting for people who used to charge exorbitant fees just to have their pigs vaccinated.
The farmers thanked CARITAS Buea for the training and promised to make good use of the knowledge acquired.
It was stated during the training that the dosage administer to an animal depends on the weight, age, crossing of sow, gestation and the severity of disease.
